Homemade Tartar Sauce

A creamy, tangy tartar sauce made with mayonnaise, dill pickles, and a touch of lemon that's perfect for seafood dishes and sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped dill pickles
  • 1 tablespoon capers whole or chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon finely chopped shallots or red onion
  • Optional: Pinch of garlic powder
  • Optional: A few drops of hot sauce

Method
 

  1. Grab a medium mixing bowl and add 1 cup of mayonnaise.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of finely chopped dill pickles to the bowl.
  3. Toss in 1 tablespoon of capers, either whole or slightly chopped.
  4. Pour in 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and stir to combine.
  5. Mix in 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard.
  6. Add 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh parsley.
  7. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Optionally, stir in chopped shallots or red onion, garlic powder, or hot sauce to your preference.
  9. Stir all ingredients together thoroughly until smooth and creamy.
  10. Cover and chill the tartar sauce in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use quality mayonnaise and finely chop all mix-ins for the best texture. Homemade tartar sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week in an airtight container. Make it vegan by using egg-free mayo and checking condiment labels.
