Ingredients
  

For The Apple Filling
  • 6 medium apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work great
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • Pinch of salt
For The Crisp Topping
  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter cold and cubed

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Peel and slice the apples evenly into thin slices.
  3. In a bowl, toss the apple slices with flour, cinnamon, vanilla extract, lemon juice, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt until well coated.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon.
  5. Add cold, cubed butter to the topping mixture and use a fork or your fingers to mix until a crumbly texture forms.
  6. Grease a baking dish and pour in the apple mixture.
  7. Evenly cover the apples with the crisp topping.
  8. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the edges are bubbly.
  9. Let the apple crisp cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra texture, add chopped nuts to the topping. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for a classic finish. You can mix different types of apples for a deeper flavor. Make sure the butter is cold to achieve the perfect crumbly topping.
